Let's Talk About Angels
And Share a True Angel Story of a Child's Astounding Physical Healing
Many people believe that angels are real and active in our lives. The Bible even tells us to be very aware of them, as they are sometimes nearby (Hebrews 13:2).
I did not see angels in heaven, although many of my friends have. My friend, Pam, saw thousands. My friend, Leah, felt the brush of their wings. I know others who met their guardian angels, the one or three who’d watched over them their entire earthly lives (Psalm 91:11-13).
(At the end of all these thoughts, I have a special angel story for you). :-)
Since I had some angelic experiences in the past, twenty years ago, I compiled an anthology book called “Then Along Came an Angel.” It is out of print now, although it is still available at some used bookstores. But, as you can guess, there is now renewed interest. All that “heavenly thinking.” And with my new revelation of taking the Bible literally and actually being able to read the Old Testament without cringing, verses look a bit different to me.
What do we know about angels? Perhaps more than you think. The Bible actually has many references to angels, and when we include the experiences of trusted people, it could make a whole library.
THEY MAY BE ON THE LARGISH SIDE - Psalm 103:20 describes them as “mighty ones”, (as do other verses). Praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word (Psalm 103:20 NIV). In addition, Isaiah 6:2 appears to talk about multiple wings, indicating a large breadth.
Jim Woodford, in his book “Heaven: An Unexpected Journey,” describes the three angels who met him as huge. They were at least seven feet tall, and it also became evident later that a leader within the angel’s group was even larger. In “I Believe in Heaven” by Cecil Murphey and Twila Beck, Sally’s story of when she is in bed with stage four cancer tells us the same. “Did you see him?…He was huge. Absolutely massive…he filled that half of the room…I got the feeling he’s been here for a long, long time. Maybe my whole life. He felt so familiar.” Also in “I Believe in Heaven”, Lonnie Honeycutt describes the angels that appeared to accompany him to heaven. He estimated that they were at least 6.5-7 feet tall (page 43).
(Note: Caps below are not to yell at you but to help the “major points” stand out better. Substack needs to work on some other font options.)
THEY HAVE SOME HUMAN FEATURES - Isaiah 6:2 (NIV) says, Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. This seraphim had feet and a face. And we know in Genesis 18 and 19, angels take on complete (as far as we know) human form and eat food and drink with people. We also know that they speak (although that may be telepathic, the main communication method in heaven).
Countless people with NDE experiences or people at the end of life talk about the human aspects of angels, including their faces and hands. Some angels have even sat in chairs or next to someone on a bed.
OTHERS HAVE ANIMAL FEATURES—Cherubim, on the other hand, seem to have more “animal-like” features and multiple faces that may look like an ox, lion, eagle, or human (Revelation 4:7). Some people may not even call them angels, although we know their missions are to guard and protect. They appear first when sent to guard the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:24) and also pop up later in Exekial and, of course, Revelation.
THEY MAY LOOK UP TO US - Hebrews 4:1-7 (NIV) says So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”? And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.” In speaking of the angels he says, “He makes his angels spirits, and his servants flames of fire.” It is possible, then, that because God made us in his image and claims us as His children, that angels might also look up to us. No, I am not putting us on the same level as Jesus.
Check this out. Did you know that someday we will be in charge of, or at least judge the angels? I Corinthians 6:23 (NIV) says, Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!
It would feel strange to “judge” my guardian angel(s). I would prefer to leave that up to Jesus.
THERE ARE THOUSANDS - Psalm 68:17 says this, The chariots of God are tens of thousands and thousands of thousands; the Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary.
Hebrews 12:22 also speaks of this. But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering.
My friend Pam saw hundreds of thousands of angels on her heaven visit.
And also in “I Believe in Heaven”, Honeycutt says, “I initially assumed the clouds caused the white (sky); however, as we got closer I realized I was watching a myriad of angels. Countless legions of angels flew back and forth…” (page 43-44)
ANGELS HAVE NAMES AND IDENTITIES AND GABE IS NOT THE 'ALPHA DOG’ - Angels are distinct! Isn’t that cool? From Randy Alcorn’s “Heaven” book (page 283), we learn: “Angels are beings with their own histories and memories, with distinct identities, reflected in the fact that they have personal names, such as Michael and Gabriel. Under God’s direction, they serve us here on earth (Hebrews 1:14). Michael the archangel serves under God, and the other angels, in various positions, serve under Michael (Daniel 10:13; Revelation 12:7).”
Sometimes, in NDE experiences, people not only see angels but know their names.
THEY HAVE SUPERNATURAL STRENGTH & AUTHORITY -
Here are some verses to consider:
2 Peter 2:11 (NIV): yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not heap abuse on such beings when bringing judgment on them from the Lord.
Revelation 18:21 (NIV) says then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea…
Revelation 18:1 (NIV): After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.
Revelation 10:11 (NIV): Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars.
Here is an angel story from Rebecca for you from “Then Along Came an Angel”:
Anthony’s Angels
by Rebecca & Julie Bonn Blank
I’ve always believed in angels and that God answers prayers. During the past four years, I’ve also learned how God uses his angels to comfort, lead, and strengthen us.
My journey began with the birth of my son, which was a miracle within itself. But my first true encounter with God’s healing power was when Anthony was hospitalized for the second time with massive internal bleeding for reasons unknown. He was just 10 months old, and as helpless as you could be. It hurt my heart to have the love of my life suffering so and for seemingly no reason. They immediately gave him a blood transfusion.
That night in the Critical Care Unit, I cried and cried. I never cried so much in all my life; I could literally feel my heart tearing apart. I trembled as I watched my son struggle. I refused to eat or to leave his side. I sobbed to God with all I had.
The clock ticked toward four in the morning, and the room was very dark. The only light I saw was the light of the nurse’s station, but even it was very dim. With me, I carried a Bible and a Rosary. I began to pray, and with every word, my soul cried out to Jesus to save my son. I realized what Mary must have felt when Jesus was crucified.
Suddenly, everything around me grew fuzzy. I continued to pray, keeping my eyes fixed on the floor and then on my son. I could barely see anything, because it was so dark.
Then I sensed a warm light behind me as if someone had turned on the overhead. I stopped praying and looked behind me, and there was nothing there but the back of the room. No lights were on. I turned back around to pray more and as soon as I turned away, the room glowed behind me again. The more I prayed, the brighter the light got. The whole room seemed lit now, and I could actually see my shadow on the floor. The light always came from behind me, and each time I looked behind me, there was only complete darkness.
With me were three images, clouded brightly in light. I can’t describe them. I can't tell you if they were male or female. But there was no fear, just absolute peace.
“You are not alone.” I felt, rather than heard the message.
After praying, I got up and kissed my son, and understood suddenly that he would be okay. As the tears flowed from my face onto his, I knew with certainty that he would be healed. And he’d be blessed.
I then went to the chapel, and I opened my Bible. I was led directly to Psalm 91:10-11, which I’d never read before. “... for He will command His angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” The verse gave me strength, and I immediately committed it to memory. That evening, I repeated it to myself over and over.
The next morning, my son’s bleeding had stopped. By the day after, he was released from the hospital. The doctors really did not want to release him. They still did not know what had happened and worried about it happening again. But, they couldn’t hold him down. He was happily jumping all over the place.
Amazingly, although before Anthony went to the hospital, his vocabulary had included only “mama,” “dada” and “baba,” he now spoke clearly “Jesus” and went home repeating it over and over.
My son is now four years old and has been fine ever since. I have felt the presence of angels many times and have witnessed other times when they helped us again. I am grateful that God has given them watch over us, and that they are always present. I will forever be grateful for the role they played in my family’s life.
